THE RACKET : LIST 6 - Drum Machines for the Long Weekend
Some things to note about this, our 6th List:
1. Martin Rev is one part of Suicide. The duo - Rev and Alan Vega - pummeled audiences with sonic feedback for years and years and years. At some point, Rev slipped away to make catchy weirdness like this. Martin Rev has some mean sunglasses.
2. Paul McCartney's album McCartney II - his second solo album - is a strange, strange 80s new wave/electronica beast. "Darkroom" is weird, but "Temporary Secretary" and "Check My Machine" are some robots stole McCartney's brain, colonized said brain and then placed his hands on nothing but synthesizers and drum machines for a lonnnnng weekend. So, you know, awesome.
3. Yes, yes we have used Haruomi Hosono's 薔薇と野獣 on a different list, but that was the (new ver.), a slippery, psych-lounge track best suited for a glass of cheap vermouth and a velvet couch. This version (orig. ver.) sounds like Hosono swallowed the masters from an early NES game and then decided to make some garage rock.
We thought we'd grown tired of a few of the more classic sounding soul and r&b jams, so this playlist kicks off with a foot in weird town before we realized we'll never grow tired of soul and r&b jams and shame on us for ever even thinking the thought.
